Chapter 12
Health And Fitness
Americans are fatter than ever before. What’d you say? You can't call people fat! You mean to tell me that calling fat people "fat" isn't politically correct? Oh, well. As I've said, that's never been my forte. If I were fat I'd certainly call it fat! And I just hate it when people call it cellulite. Especially when they pronounce it "cell-u-leet."
Now I know that Oprah has taught everyone to embrace themselves as who they are; that you should love yourself and all your rolls. I totally blame her for all these chunky people wearing clothes they have no business wearing. And here's a question for you: If it's perfectly fine to be overweight, why has Oprah fought it all these years? Why does every overweight person that I know wish that they could lose weight? I'm just saying.
A 2007-2008 study reported by the CDC, or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that approximately 68% of American adults over 20 years of age are overweight. If that weren't bad enough, half of these folks are considered obese; that is, at least 30 pounds overweight.
Before some of you start getting all defensive, I will say that I understand that some people are genetically prone to obesity. But I also think that excuse is used all too often as a cop out for too many folks with no self-control.
If you want to be fat and sassy, it's your God-given right to do so. Just don't complain to everyone else about all your weight-related health problems because you don't have the willpower to quit stuffing your piehole. Maybe that's just my opinion, though.
And don't get me started on America's overweight kids. That same 2007-2008 study says that approximately 10% of kids aged 2-5 are overweight. Even more stunning is that 20% of kids 6-11 years old are overweight too. Unbelievable. It's funny how everything we do in society is supposedly to make things better "for the kids," yet some parents don't mind taking years off their child's life by letting their "baby fat" get out of hand. But maybe that's just my opinion too. Nope. I've got backup.
A New York Times article from March 17, 2005 cites a report from The New England Journal of Medicine saying that our kids' life spans could be five years shorter than our own, not to mention all the day-to-day health risks they're likely to face throughout their lives due to carrying around all that extra weight. So if you really love your kids, don't be afraid to smack a Twinkie from their grubby little hands every now and then.
Few things make me sadder than seeing a really fat kid. I don't blame the kid. It's the parent's fault. Heck, kids will eat dirt if you let them. It's disturbing to me that giving your kid a couple of swats can be considered child abuse nowadays, but giving them a lifetime of health problems and an early grave isn't. If you say so. Okay, I got started anyway, but I'll move on.
